I was just wonder what the reason was, I couldn't find it where I searched.. perhaps wrong locations. Quite likely. Smiley

..What the reason was for the change from EeePCLinuxOS to Unity. I know I saw a brief statement that it was done, but couldn't find why.

Biggest reason why I ask, is that I was trying to install CAELinuxOS to my Eee, but the install fails. I found 2 other users that had similar results but with no replies.. perhaps the reply sits within the reason for prompting a change from EPCLOS to Unity?

Thanks in advance.

I won't go into the whys and wherefores of Unity-Linux, thats well documented.

The developers of EeePCLinuxOS (Read JMiahMan) were not happy with the direction of PCLinuxOS with respect to the EeePC so decided to go with a new distribution based on Unity-Linux.  I did do a very Alpha release of EeePCLinux based on PCLinuxOS 2009.1 but found that although it worked OK, support for the function keys in particular was almost totally lacking with PCLOS.

JMiahMan restarted the project as Synergy-Linux based on Unity-Linux. Unfortunately due to his posting to Iraq and personal matters, he is unable to contribute for some time. In fact if you visit http://synergy-linux.com you will see that the forum is broken and as JMiahMan is the only admin on that forum it could be like that for some time.

I have converted my old eeepclinuxos.co.uk site to http://synergy-linux.org and I'm trying to continue on my own untill JMiahMan is able to return.

As you will see from my forum, I have had a fair bit of success using Unity with KDE4 and have been able to get a working compressed install running on my Eeep.

I won't be releasing anything yet though until there is at least a public alpha of Unity to work with, everything is pre-alpha at the moment and anything I do release will be aimed squarely at the 701 as that's all I have.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Ah. Ok.

So I guess I would be stuck trying the same thing, as I would like to find something more geared to my 904HA Smiley

701 seems to be the ..most popular, or one of the 1000 series. Smiley

I understood there were many distros that had some aspect or other that was missing, like sound, Fn keys, ASUS key (for lack of a better word..), Atheros card.. Screen.. Although, as I understand it, there are solutions to each and every apparent problem, it seems none are in one distro all at once.

It reminds me of why I continue to use Windows. One machine that started purely for gaming had the requirement for the video card of .Net, and well.. XP was the only solution at the time. Besides, I had a great deal to save 200$ on the card at the time. In hind sight, I should have went with my original idea, no .net required, and there was support, a few weeks later for that particular card. :/ Figures eh? Smiley

I am still considering starting from scratch. MOPLinux ?  My Own Linux. Smiley

It's not so much that I am new, more that I am old. AT&T/UNIX was still .. young. And soon became a few off shoots. I am hoping I can re-learn/remember most of what I put aside when everything was command lines or entered directly. LDA PSH MOV were much simpler then remembering which, : ; [ ] { } ( ) < >.. Did I miss any? went before or after the other.

Please let me know how things go. And I will check back from time to time, as frustration sets in, dissolves, and sets in yet again. I think that is part of the learning curve. (Confusion gets thrown in during and after each phase. Smiley )

Cheers

If you want to roll your own, you could do worse than Unity, when the first public Alpha is released, give it a go. It's using the most up to date kernel which has most of the stuff you need in it I would guess. I didn't have to do anything to get most of my ASUS keys working on the 701. Look out for a release from Granular as their next will be Unity based.

By the way what's this Windows you talk about? Is it a new distro?  Grin
