And the inspiration fills my head again. I know I should be researching, but when something hits me, I have to draw it Another quicky, inspired by a site DidouPH found ( http://www.zara-arshad.com/unityflag.html <- but not the unity flag, the Prayer flags is where this is inspired from) and pmb's sketch. Anyway, this is sorta old school too. Forgive me, but I AM old school.

I always pictured the old UNIX gurus as old school--people like the Woz and RMS. If you ever used a time-sharing OS on a computer with "PDP" in its name, you are most certainly old school!

Age has little to do with one's "school" classification. And how do you know I have _not_ "used a time-sharing OS on a computer with "PDP" in its name.", after all?

Well this is colorful enough anyway, and has kind of a unity theme. I made this out of free elements from wikimedia[attachment=16]

I like a contest based on member submissions... definitely takes the load off me n DidouPH. And I am eager to see what talent there is around... (always scouting)
No need to worry about me, I'm talentless!! But like I said, red on white...it's just something I threw in paint! Some of my sketches are here geminiguygraphics.blog I see a couple have also thought of the U & L integration. The biggest point here, is to really tap your brain to conjure up an image which is unique, elegant, and sums up the meaning of the project with one, simplistic, and beautiful glance. This is not going unlike any other logo project of the past. This is what it's all about folks.... hashing out ideas, geared toward one, final, brilliant objective. It takes time, will not happen over night, and expect many submissions. I know everyone would like to see a logo emblazened everywhere tomorrow morning (example only) but... realize, which ever logo comes of this, will be that which represents this project for the long haul.. So, for me, there is no rush just to be done with it and make everyone happy.. I am not meaning months or years... but definitely not within 2 or 3 days... there are too many potentials. There are some good ideas here, but that is exactly the stage this part of the project is at... "ideas" and rough thoughts. Not a designer?? scribble you idea out on a piece of paper, scan it in... post it! Even if the contest would be held on original ideas alone... the design team can then bring it to life and make it gorgeous. We are not looking at any works right now and thinking "ugly" or anything.. we are looking at the originality and brilliance behind the work. "does the image perform the task, and meet all the goals?" And, don't feel bad about anything you put up... I made one already which has been likened to both a swashtika and a recycling bin Just let your minds and imaginations flow.... " be the logo"

HI Guys, I have digged a bit with google, and other search engines, and I have found in google this one, in 'chain-link' symbols. This symbol is unique, what means is: Strength in Unity. Sorry for its size, and only for in white - but I drop it here because many people (including me) really liked this free picture. I think if we handle right this (shadowing, or painting the half part of one chain - to have an bold 'U') - then it has a BIG potential to be our logo. I think the 'penguin-times' are over, we are strong chain-links in Unity - and everybody part of it, witch keeps us together. What do you think guys? Can I have your votes? Let's rock 'n' roll !

can't we stop voting for what we like or not but rather focus on what is important !
we are here to think and discuss about a logo design, not to elect one !

How can we discuss without saying what we like or don't like?

Ok, I think this time I will give up on creating any graphics but to communicate my idea more. This is based on my understanding about Unity Linux and please correct me if there is something wrong about it.
First, I was told that Unity Linux were be a 'transparent' developed Linux system. Which mean users can easily participate in the development. By taking this as my my first concept, I am thinking of creating something in transparent. Imagine having a transparent watch and as you look into it carefully, you can actually see the moving gears in it. So in applying the same concept, maybe we can have a transparent logo in a clock shape (no more 'it is ready when it is ready'), the tux shape (The linux mascot), the box shape (showing Unity Inside), or whatsoever will fit.
Second, I was told that Unity Linux will be a core for other distros. So maybe we can have 'Unity Linux' text shown with LED/Neon light among the gears. It will be so bright that we know that Unity Linux is inside no matter it is the clock, tux, box or anything else. For the purpose of remastering, we can utilize the shape that we have. Example: 1. clock - each remaster can design a clock face symbolizing their own distro. However, it should not cover whole light of 'Unity Linux' text. You will somehow see the 'Unity Linux' under the logo. 2. Tux - even simple. Just design a shirt for it and follow the same principle as the clock. 3. Box - almost same as Tux. (Actually all the three are actually the same.)
This is what I have in my mind so far. Welcome for any comments.

Archdevil's suggestion makes me think...I hate to sound cliché, but Tux is an image that typically features prominently in Linux culture. Could we do something that has Tux shaking hands (flippers?) with something or someone? I'm not exactly sure what he could be "uniting" with, though.
Just a thought.
