Just to say it's good to see this project getting off the ground. Still not sure exactly what it is, but sure I'll learn that if I watch what happens!

Hey and welcome to the Unity Linux Forums.
ummmmmm if you're not sure what it's going to be. It'll be a common core, of the base linux packages. It will then be the core of the many of the PCLinuxOS remasters. But it'll be a common core of packages that can be used by several linux distributions. Currently the team is in discussion as far as a Unity Release. So if ya hang around, I'm sure we'll have some more on the topic soon.

So, what exactly is included in a common core? Kernel, obviously, compiler? shell? networking utilities?
Will there be a repository of the other things - desktop, browsers, Office etc, or will it be up to the user to find and add these?

Yes, yes, and yes.
There will be a repo containing packages, and it's already being built. Things should have fairly quickly, just given the size of our team, and our team members willingness to devote a lot of time to this project.
If you're interested in a certain package, head over to the package suggest in this forum.
